I think it has to do with rape for some reason. "It's sad sad story when a mother will teach her daughter she ought to hate a perfect stranger."
Teaching a child of rape that she should be scared of men, because of what happened to her mother. And the mother has all the resentment towards her raper therefore she isn't ready to come to tirms with it. An dfor some reason it makes me think she knew her raper beforehand and is not ready to forgive him.
I think. I'm probably wrong. Oh well.
