This is a song that makes me smile. I think Eric Bogle reflects on a peculiar food habit: The Bar-B-Que. Being a Scottish immigrant In Australia he was in the position to wonder why trough new eyes. He describes with mild humor the downsides of preparing your meat in such a primitive way under unfavorable conditions. It seems to me over the world there are people working very hard to earn the money to by a proper house with a luxurious kitchen and still risk spoiling their meat over a primitive fire. Bogle makes it sound like a strange cult, but he puts it in perspective by mentioning food habits in other countries that seem strange to people not being raised in that particular country. The lyrics above are different from the words in the Eric Bogle songbook. The ‘snacks’ are snags in the original text, meaning sausage, if I remember correctly. And in my copy of the songbook The Greeks go crackers over their Moussaka in stead of throwing kakis over their Mousakis. I once read an explanation of some of the slang. The Esky means cool box, mossys are fierce mosquitos and the family dunny seems to be and outdoor toilet. Lovely song, I sang it once as an opening ‘speech’ at the barbecue at work, provoking a few smiles...
