I agree with all other meanings that have been posted as far as this song goes. But I also believe it could be that the person speaking in the song was in a bad relationship previously and now he's got this new person in his life who he wants to love but he's afraid to. He wants to give himself away but he's afraid. He wants to love. He wants the other person to hang on while he gets his stuff together so he can give them a chance.
