This song does an excellent job of depicting life in a psych ward. I won a week-long stay a few years back for suicidal ideation & major depressive disorder. You learn the ropes pretty quickly. And you realize that you no longer have any privacy: the staff inspects everything that you bring with you or that a visitor brings to you before you can have it; shower stalls don't have doors or curtains; the door to your room is always open and there's a staff member shining a flashlight in every 10 minutes @ night to make sure you haven't hung yourself with your sheets. The repeat customers on my floor were quick to give me advice on what to say in group counseling sessions or tell the staff in order to gain privileges and ultimately be released.

And in comes the cyncial divorcee with a totally different take on the whole thing.
To me, this is a song from a narcissist to the poor sucker with whom he claims to be in love. The dude blows just enough sunshine in his lover's direction to give the appearance of a regular lovesick romeo, but he's actually a stalker who wants to control the other person's emotions, thoughts and dreams. It's an obsessive love, thus the incessant phone calls to see if all's well. And this dude is so mentally off kilter that he lives in his own reality in which the other person "picked" him.
