Like Mike said above, I believe the sand are struggles, beasts that hurt and harm. The water is what he's fighting for, getting closer to God. He said[/i]"it's all that I have and all that I need". The [i]"waves of the water" are the worldly items and yes, distractions. And they mean nothing to him. But, Tyler also thinks that no matter how hard he strains to hold the water, the sand is going to be bigger and harder to pass through. He thinks the water will drain and then there will be nothing left.
