Woody Guthrie – This Land Is Your Land lyrics
This land is your land This land is my land
From California to the New York island;
From the red wood forest to the Gulf Stream waters
This land was made for you and Me
.

As I was walking that ribbon of highway,
I saw above me that endless skyway:
I saw below me that golden valley:
This land was made for you and me.

I've roamed and rambled and I followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts;
And all around me a voice was sounding:
This land was made for you and me.

When the sun came shining, and I was strolling,
And the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling,
As the fog was lifting a voice was chanting:
This land was made for you and me.

As I went walking I saw a sign there
And on the sign it said "No Trespassing."
But on the other side it didn't say nothing,
That side was made for you and me
.

In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people,
By the relief office I seen my people;
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking
Is this land made for you and me?

Nobody living can ever stop me,
As I go walking that freedom highway;
Nobody living can ever make me turn back
This land was made for you and me.

    Always thought of this as a nice, jingoist, patriotic hymn until I was somewhere over 60 and finally heard the last three verses (that are almost always omitted from performances). Now these last three verses reveal hidden meanings in the rest of the song that I did not perceive before. Read for yourself those "lost" verses and than go back and read the rest of the lyrics for an awakening.
    Much more in tune with what woodie stood for, in my mind.

    Only an uneducated statist would call Woody Guthrie a knee jerk communist. He felt that this land belonged to the people not the corporations. And unless you're a corporate boot licking fascist you would see that what he said has come true beyond what he could have imagined, we now live in a society where corporate run government affects every aspect of our lives.

    This song is about the okies who had to leave because of the dust bowl (the environmental disaster in Oklahoma caused by their destroying their wind rows. The wind came and blew away all the top soil and caused the dust bowls.} The roads they used were called freedom highways on their way to California and the sanfernando valley(the golden valley) when they got there only so many were hired to work the farms. The rest had to rely on public welfare, a lot of them did go (hungry).

    Just exactly how many billions do you think one man needs.
    The rich capitalists ate above all else one thing
    EXTREMELY GREEDY and in continuing the inequality and unfairness they are also EXTREMELY CRUEL. They are also NOT followers of JESUS. To quote the bible they claim to love so much Jesus said"it is easir for a camel to get through the eye of the needle than for a rich man to enter the gates of heaven"

    It's all about woody's hobo socialism. There should be no right to private property and the government should supply you with everything so people like woody can just wander around anywhere they want and never have to work for anything. Woody was at heart a knee jerk communist in that he didn't really study the ideology but like the sound of every body else working and giving it to him because "this land is my land" after all.
