The Used – Poetic Tragedy lyrics
The cup is not half empty as pessimists say
As far as he sees nothings left in the cup
A whole cup full of nothing for him to indulge
Since the voice of ambition has long since been shut up

A singer, a writer, he's not dreaming now of going nowhere
He gave heed to nothing, and all that he was...
Is just a tragedy

So he voyages in circles
Succeeds getting nowhere
And submits to the substance
That first got him there there there there!!

Then in violent, frustration he cries out to God
Or just no one
Is there a point to this madness and all that he was...
Is just a tragedy

He feels alone
His heart in his hand
He's alone
He feels alone
I feel........

Then on that last day he breaks
He stood tall
Then he yelled...then he yells then in violent, frustration he cries out to God
Or just no one
Is there a point to this madness and all that he was...
Is just a tragedy

If you know at least a bit about the used you know that bert used to be homeless when the band started playing. This was due to his addiction to crystal meth (hence 'he submits to the substance that first got him there' and 'he feels alone. I feel alone') and also because he left his parent's place while he was younger.
The world of music is very hard, especially when you're starting off so he didn't hope for a lot ('he's not dreaming now of going nowhere').
All of these doubts, frustrations and addictions led to the suicidal thoughts and eventually a successfull attempt ('and then on the last day he breaks'). On the cd where the lyrics to this song are written it is actually said 'and then he took his life'.
To me, this song is about how bert really felt. About his frustration and life in general. However, bert's songs can be interpretaded in anyway. These are just my thoughts. No meaning for any song is wrong. It's all about interpretating.
My favourite song of all time. Expresses how I feel.
    Thanks for reading.

This is an amazing song. I listen to it just for the beat and music, but the lyrics are really deep too. Absolutely fantastic.
So, about the song. It seems to be about a boy who has a bad view of the world now. He used to be able to do whatever he wanted (singing, writing, partying.) because it was fun; but now that he's older, he's stuck doing things he doesn't want to do, which gets frustrating and nerve-racking. Eventually, he starts to change everything about himself and goes crazy with anger, but inside he's horribly depressed. He can pray, but no "God" helps him, or anyone else. He commits suicide and there you go.
