When I was growing up all I knew was battered, belittled, and abused. My dna mo gave birth to a baby boy when I was 16 0r so. After his birth I held him and cried, I knew if she kept him, she would just damage him too. So as I was getting ready to leave the room I took his lilt-shirt an extra that was in his lil crib at the hospital-i kept it. Took a lil piece off and put it in my locket that my grand mother gave me when I was a teenager with the one other thing that meant the world too me-. I never forgot my little brother and found him after sooo many years. And he is the strongest person I know and love, next to my two lil girls. But that locket was taken from me with the one other thing I will never get back. So this song means everything to me and is close as I will ever get as if I still had the locket-that was 1986.

There are definitely references to drug use, but I have a different take on the "pain" hits". Having been in group therapy before, I have seen a lot of cutters. They deal with mental pain by hurting themselves physically. That's what I think of with that phrase, although I think drug use is more probably. I've seen where an addict also cuts. Cutting itself is an addiction, however. I can't imagine the pain one feels that actually physically hurting yourself (not only hurting your health if that makes sense). Obviously she's lost a child, whether by death , giving him up or even having him taken away. But I go with death since she "talks to angels" - her son. This guy loves her, but her lover is her addiction.

Born into a family that pays no attention to her. The pain of neglect and lonliness is unbearable to her. She finds a place of comfort by using drugs. The pain is the needle slipping in and she welcomes it. It is the only way to escape her pain of loneliness. Unable to feel love for herself or anyone she prefers solitude and her drugs. She bares a clild of her but cannot care for him because she has not learned to care for herself. She feels there is no hope in this life and seeks oblivion, and a heaven if it exists, there's nothing here for her.
