His life was a mess. Now, it is changed for the better. He has begun to live his dreams. But he fears this change for the better is just a dream. His words and smile exist as they never have before. This is too good to be true. He thinks he must be sleeping and in a dream. The mistakes of the past are gone and he likes himself. If this is a dream he is not sure he wants to wake up. This is awesome.

The words hit me like a mac truck, I get a lump in my throat each time I hear this song. I've been about as low as a person can go, for so many years. To me this song speaks to the fact that he has just survived for so long. "this is my life, it's not what it was before", "these are my dreams i've never lived before". He enjoys what he is experiencing but he feels guilty for it, or rather he feels out of his comfort zone. "these are my words i've never spoke before, i think i'm doing ok". He is worried that things could go back, but he feels good at the moment, and he has learned to accept what he has at the moment. When he talks about forgiveness he is talking about the pain and hate he has for those that he blamed for his situation. I have learned that each day is one more step, and be thankful for the day you have.

I think this song means (and I know I may not be right, since I didn't actually write the song) that a lot of good changes has come to this person in a way that all there failures (vainness), and all there mistakes have started to go away, because they have learned to forgive themselves, and forget. And because of that they are no longer ashamed to be the person they are right now. And I think when it says "now that we're here, it's so far away" that now they are so far from where they once were, and they're surprised of that. But ya, that's what I think this song means.
