    Before I start, just gotta say. This song is amazing and I definitely relate to it. Ok, I believe the song is about a couple. The guy keeps trying to change "I said so many times I would change my ways" and be the man his girlfriend wants/ deserves, aka "the saint". But can't escape his past or mistakes "the sinner". Though he is still in love with his girlfriend and is grateful to her "I'll always keep you inside, you healed my heart, and my life..." He knows he's hurting her. So he leaves her, telling her all these things, and accepting the choice he made even though it hurts him.

    I played this song at my Dads funeral. I had just heard the song a few months before. I initially heard it as a "break up" song. But as the time came for my Father to pass, it was THIS SONG that spoke to me. It was my Father speaking through the words that it was okay for me to go on. That he wanted me to know that through it all I, being his daughter is was what he lived for. And good and bad, he loved me through it all. He may have made alot of mistakes in his life, but he tried. And that's what matters the most. It makes me cry every damn time in hear it. But in the end, I smile. I love you Dad.....rest easy old man.

    Read the first 3-4 lines. He's leaving his girl friend and saying good bye and killing himself before he causes anymore destruction. Shinedown songs are all about addiction. He can't seem to change his ways even tho he wants to desperately. He says she healed his heart as if it wasn't still there to be healed anymore. If it was and was healed why would he leave?

    I believe this song is about a breakup due to being on the road a lot. She breaks up with him for what he considers the last time and he being a man must pursue his purpose no matter how much she tries to change him. He lives his life like a gypsy because he is always on the road. He left the spare key on the table and left to pursue his dreams. Him pursuing his dreams makes it hard to be home and being home on the weekends isnt working for her. So he'll be on his way.

    I truly believe this song is about the ups and downs of life. What I mean by this is that (for example) in the 1st 2 lines he says “ wrap me in the bolt of lightning send me on my way still smiling “is about being born. The lightning represents Zeus/God sending him into the world

    When I listened to this song for the first time I didn't really listen to the lyrics. But the second time I listen to it I realized what it was about, And ever since it has helped me through the hardest times in my life. I am glad that shinedown made that song without the song I don't know what would help me through hard times.

    It's about a couple who love each other so much they are hurting each other it's turned into anger and hate break up back together repetitively one is walking away to free both them selves and doesn't want to but knows he has to make sure to stop the suffering it's painful and one has to admit that they are not just the hero cause never wanted to be also is the death one gave stooped to where they never wanted to go or be emotionally or even admit verbally one has realised they are actually the distraction and will never not be and that one hates that but excepts that sadly, that one is sorry and can't be enough he is all of it because one loves him so much that this one would die for it their love as well as the other. Arrogance has lost pride burned admittance futile the weak has become strong and excepts selfishness. Maybe.

    Thing song speaks to me in a way. It about two lovers who spend time apart too often. Him being gone. Her at home. And somehow it hurts them. He knows it hurts her. Even though he tried better and failed. So he decides for her that it's best that he leaves and for her to be happy somehow. "Had to make a choice that was not mine, had to say good bye for the last time." He felt guilty for the hurt of being gone. So he left one last time.

    My ex boyfriedn of a 11 months told me to listen to this song. At first I just listened to it not haering the words. Then I relistend to it and I haven't stop listening to it. He was never good with words so finding songs that he could speak thro was what he did and he spoke to me thro this song. It makes a person realize what love does for a person. Good job shinedown.

    After listening to this song for I guess a 100 times I decided that it is about someone, who wants to leave or has already left a beloved one and is apologizing for that.
    I guess he, whoever he is, cannot stay where he is and explains that to her, whoever she is, tries to make her understand, that he'll always love her, no matter what and that he is sorry, but cannot change anything.
    So mostly I think the song is about someone leaving someone. =/

    Interestingly enough I see a whole other meaning to it. I feel that he was unfaithful to her and she found out. Therefore him leaving wasn't his choice, it was a consequence of him cheating. He lost his life (family he had with her) and a dear friend (his wife). Its happened before, but he did it again (I'd change my ways. No nervermind, lord knows I tried). Yes, he states how much he loves her and will always have her in his heart (but then states again... you know I tried). Personally I don't feel you can cheat on someone you love, but have heard this argument many times before.
