Renaissance – Northern Lights lyrics
Destination outward bound
I turn to see the northern lights behind the wing
Horizons seem to beckon me
Learned how to cry too young, so now I live to sing

The northern lights are in my mind
They guide me back to you
Horizons seem to beckon me
Learned how to cry too young, so now I live to sing

You know it's hard away from you
Travelling roads and passing through
It's not for money and it's not for fame
I just can't explain, sometimes it's lonely

Marking the space between the days
Early hours pass away
I sing to you of northern lights
I sing for you of northern nights

Past or future, here or there
Shelter comes in words from you, so talk to me
I hear your voice, it comforts me
In morning dreams I take your hand, you walk with me

The northern lights are in my mind
They guide me back to you
Peace enfolds the still night air
Home again I look for you and find you there

Desintation homeward now
Take the easy way, bring me down
Making the hard way now I see
Hard to be really free, I'm missing you near me

Marking the space between the days
Early hours pass away
I sing to you of northern lights
I sing for you of northern nights

[Chorus:]
The northern lights are in my mind
They guide me back to you
The northern nights are in my eyes
They guide me back to you

[Chorus 2x]

The northern lights are in my mind
They guide me back to you

I first hear this song on the car radio when driving home one night. I had stopped at the service station, to phone home and tell my darling wife I'd be home in 30 minutes (before mobile phones!) and resumed my drive. Climbing up toward the 'top of the forest' where the M1 reaches its highest point, it goes through a gap in the hills, and the golden glow of the cities beyond filled the sky. The song "Northern Lights" was on the radio, and yes I know those are not the "Northern Lights" that were probably in mind, but they have always been "my" Northern Lights. My wife died last autumn after a blissfully happy marriage of almost 50 years. So when I heard "Northern Lights" on a car radio outside as someone turned round and it reduced me to tears. I found the full version on the internet, but I can't hear it now without crying. So for me whereas it was about the joy of returning home and being reunited, now the song is about the pain of separation, and the loss of widowhood.

Fabulous progressive rock song from 1978. Just means the sadness of not having your loved one near you, and the love and shelter your loved one gives to you. Northern lights are at the northern most part of the globe and so is your heart far away from soft and tender southern climes, so far from crying, now your free, but so far from your love. Still, try working out what yes mean't by the phase 'a seasoned witch will save you from the depths of your disgrace' make northern lights an easy prog number!
