Personally, my assumption is this: the song states that the Lord will hold fast to us all, and when our time comes, we will be lifted into Heaven, free of Earthly limitations. We shouldn't fear death or allow it to overcome us, because we have salvation. Beyond this, God will protect us from the world around us. And when "He will raise you up on eagles' wings," you are a free spirit in Heaven.
