Montgomery Gentry – Where I Come From lyrics
Songwriters: Davidson, Dallas; Clawson, Rodney

Don't you dare go runnin' down
My little town where I grew up
And I won't cuss your city lights
If you ain't ever took a ride around
And cruised right through the heart of my town
Anything you'd say would be a lie

We may live our lives a little slower
But that don't mean I wouldn't be proud to show ya

Where I come from,
There's an old plowboy turnin' up dirt
Where I come from,
There's a preacher man in a cowboy shirt
Where I come from
Where a couple boys fight in the parking lot
No, nobody's gonna call the cops
Where I come from

See that door right there
Man, I swear that it ain't never been locked
And I guarantee that it never will
That ol' man right there in the rockin' chair
At the courthouse square, I'll tell ya now
He could buy your fancy car with hundred dollar bills

Don't let those faded overalls fool ya
He made his million without one day of schoolin'

Where I come from
There's a pickup truck with the tailgate down
Where I come from
The pine trees are singin' a song of the South
Where I come from
That little white church is gonna have a crownd
Yeah, I'm pretty damn proud
Where I come from

Where I come from
There's a big ol' moon shinin' down at night
Where I come from
There's a man done wrong gonna make it right

Where I come from
There's an old plowboy turnin' up dirt
Where I come from
There's a preacher man in a cowboy shirt
Where I come from
Where a couple boys fight in the parking lot
No, ain't nobody gonna call the cops

Yeah, that river runs across that ol' flat rock
Where I come from

Where I come from

The song reminds me of my hometown of marietta, oh. We've been in the news a few times for some things gone wrong, some will even say that there's nothing here for anyone. But i'll tell ya, it's home. There's nothing better than waking up and driving by the ohio river in the morning and watching the steam rolling off the water. There's nothing like driving through the country side and looking at the green rolling hills and smelling the fresh air. As you drive down the heart of the town you won't find extravagant buildings or extremely fancy restraunts but you'll see people walking and playing in the parks without the fear of being harmed. So in all realaity, the song to me, means that it's having the comfort of home, where you grew up, and loving it and not being ashamed of what your town does or doesn't have, it's being proud of what you call home, whether it's new york city, las vegas, or marietta, oh. Be proud of your roots, it's where you grew up, it's where your parents raised you, it's most likely where they have called home as well as their parents.

This song is supposed to and is going to be my grad song! It describes the little town that I have grown up in all my life! I love my town and this song! This song also shows compassion and respect for the little things in life, things you wouldnt notice on a regular basis! So I am going to show pride in my town, we may only have a population of 400 but it is the best town anyone can grow up in.

Nostalgia for a place where 90% of americans do _not_ live and haven't lived for several generations now. Times change, whether we like it or not. We are not, and should not be, the america of the 1950's, especially not if we want to compete in a globalized world, though there were some things about life that were better in the 1950's. But if you want to go back to small town life in the 1950's of lassie, remember there were no dishwashers (or rather they were called "children") and your mother was putting the wet laundry (heavy cotton stuff, no synthetic materials) through the wringer and hanging it on the line, with no other alternative if it was raining. You didn't do the laundry when you wanted to. You did it when it was sunny and maybe with a washboard. No problem, mom was home all day every day if she had to be, whether she liked it or not. Montgomery gentry would be working in a primitive sound studio, just discovering electric guitars and singing music that really sounds like country music. Have all the modern conveniences without modern society? Can't happen. The reason we need the modern conveniences is that society changed and society changed because we got the modern conveniences. The changes go hand in hand and always have. By the way, I just heard the song this morning on the radio, which prompted me to look up the lyrics and it's nice music, I like it. Like I like watching mister ed and our miss brooks.

I think this song means you shouldn't make fun of anyone or where they come from because you don't know there true hometown. You shouldn't judge anyone or where they come from unless you truly know the real heart and kindness of a small town. Anything you say just comes from your mind and just because someone was raised in a small town doesn't mean you can make fun of their accent or how they were raised.

I come from a back dirt road (trail) that was my paradise along the alleghany river. Growing up we would go up into the woods and swing on old vines and stay up there for hours, we'd go fishing off our docks and never catch a thing but minos and we would name them and then let 'em go. And on hot days we would play in the muddy river bank and make mid pies and throw mud at each other. At night we would sit around the camp fire with country music in the background and listen to our parents talk about the "good ole days".

I think that this song means that even though a lot of people may not accept your life how it is, you just need to be true to yourself and accept it. If you don't accept it, how can you expect anyone else to? This is obviously taking place in a big city. Montgomety gentry is saying that if you want to talk bad about the place he was born and raised, don't expect him to not say anything bad about the place you grew up. Point of the song is don't talk bad about someone/something and think they won't say anything back. No one will let you just stomp all over the place they're from, and call it bad names. They're going to defend it no matter what. And the person who is "name-calling" or being "rude" to their hometown, needs to be in that other persons shoes. It hurts. I know.
Cause I'm from a small town. It really irritates me when people talk about how small and boring it is. No one really gets it.

For anyone who has grown up in or around a farming community this song represents a dying tradition. People don't take the time to enjoy the little things in big cities, it is nice to just sit back and enjoy watching the rain sometimes. I feel terrible for the people in the city who think that a simple life is a bad thing. I like it when people tell me how simple my life is, I wish they could live just one day that way.

To me it's kind of what I grow up to. Right now, I'm in high school, but I live out in the country 12 miles from the city where we shop, go to school, etc. When my friends diss my country life in a small town of driving the gator around or bein out in the field, driving tractors and what not, I do get kind of upset. The song represents my life, and my friends that live out here with me. That's what it means to me.
