Just go to the mastodon website, a band member explains that it's about how people buy and sell rare tree burls in the are where they're from. Specifically, they are referencing crimes that have been committed by people trying to obtain these rare burls. I think underneath that though, they're making a statement that "it's just the curl of the burl" and yet people are doing bad stuff to get them. But they resign to the idea that "that's just the way of the world". Kind of a frustrated response with people's behavior and the lack of ability to explain it.

I could be way off here, but I like to see this song as about a cause and effect thing - "killed a man cause he killed my goat" and that "thats just the way of the world" from wiki, a burl forms in a tree where it undergoes some form of stress - doin' something hardcore, something else is gonna happen cause of it - but its just the 'curl' of the burl - its just what happens when you're trying to push something hard - but its just the way the world is. 'burl' can also mean "an attempt" in slang, but there are clearly references to trees in the song. Time to get out and give it a burl!

Ok, the previous explanation about selling tree burl for money is the biggest crock of bull that ever existed.
Now, Burl: A slub or lump in wool or cloth.
Different types of wool / cloth have a characteristic curl that can't be changed. I. E. The curl is the innate characteristic of that particular burl.
Implies: This is how the world is, or this is how life is. Other explanations, pfft, what losers.
