    Don't actually know what the intended meaning of the song was or is-I was a teenager when it was a new song on the radio. Now I am 62 and feeling very reflective of my life-wondering where it all went! Have 6 great Kids and 14 grandkids-feeling very melancholy about it all. Contemplating retirement and the drastic changes that come with that. Have been involved in religion my entire life-but have many questions about the whole plan. This song causes me to reflect deeper on all of it.

    The song shows no matter how bad things are, and no matter what ridiculous wars we fight for other people, we as human beings still cling to life and don't want to die, and as we reflect on human misery, and know the world is a terrible place, the inner core of our souls, give us faith, and the fear of death, and not knowing where we go after is worse than death itself for most of us.

    I remember watching a documentary on public tv about charlie company in nam. The guys refused to obey their lt. When he told them to walk down a road. They told him it was a sure way to get ambushed and wouldn't do it. While they were laying around on break they were playing the radio and this song was on and the verse about the world being a bad place but not wanting to die just hit home with me and I've never forgotten that.

    The song has touch me twice now in my life, in 1969 I was drafted into the army with overwhelming feelings and uncertainties which I connected with on many lines in the song and again I am now I have throat cancer left without a voice box and probably not long for this world. Sometimes on a dark dreary day while driving alone I punch it in the cd as a cathartic relief and let the tears flow.

    I am attempting to write a book right now about a cancer patient. My idea has an interesting twist. I don't understand where my ideas are coming from but I wake up with bits of this interesting story unfolding. It is kinda disturbing but this song has a place I'm my story. I am a retired man but this story (as it unfolds) really burns in my heart. So uncharacteristic for me. What a great song that still hits the mark.

    I was driving with my dad 7-8 years ago and I must have had an oldie's station on. When the line "the world is a bad place, a terrible place to live) played, my dad(a wwii veteran)burst out laughing. Neither of us could know that within 2-3 years both he and my mom would be gone. Now this song reminds me of them as it is coming around to that time of year again.

    This song takes me back to my own home in oakland, california, when I was in high school. It kind of summed up what I was going through at the time. I was moody, on an emotional roller coaster. Life was bittersweet at the time and I felt despair at what was going on in the world (e. G. , the viet nam conflict). Honestly, it was a depressing time for me but I didn't want to die.

    Dean Ford had the chance to say it was about Viet Nam when he was interviewed, but he didn't say that. I personally think it goes much deeper than that - deeper as into the meaning of life itself. 1970 was a very spiritual time for song writing, and this one, I think, is one of the most spiritual songs to ever hit the charts. The solution to, "The world is a bad place, a bad place, a terrible place to live," is simply, "Take me back to my own home." In other words, our true home cannot be found on earth; it can only be found in Heaven, and little by little we are all dying to get there!

    For what it's worth, the lyric is "take me back to my *old* home" as spelled out in Dean Ford's latter day recording of "Reflections of My Life" - Produced by Joe Tansin. In the music video you'll see it written on the chalkboard. But you might want to take along a box of Kleenex.

    I recall this song as a teenager. Always enjoyed hearing it, as I commenced my nonconformist rebellion for independence in the late 1960's against The Establishment. Yippie Movement Founder Jerry Rubin (Chicago 7) became my idol. I formed protest in high school my Junior year, when we boys were refused registration until we shortened our hair from touching our shirt collars. We won that protest, when the Superintendent of Public Schools in Idaho threatened truancy if not attending school. I informed him of his stupidity, especially when possessing a PhD. I'm was not free from my own error of judgement, having called a returning Vietnam Veteran a Babykiller. My Korean Veteran Step-Father confronted me. Asked me what I knew about the Vietnam War. Asked me what I would do if thugs were beating up my little brothers. "Are you going to help them or are you going to run?" I dropped from high school, volunteered Draft and arrived in Vietnam one month before my high school class graduated. I was called a Babykiller upon my return still a teenager; my response being a smile, as turn-around is fair play. Welcome Home to all Veterans! Great song. Peace.

    This is a song everyone who served in Vietnam can relate to. It's also a song for those left behind with their children who would never know their dad. We realize what a fine thread we are all clinging to in life and how quickly we're gone. We look back because we don't have the ability to look forward any longer. I thank every vet who posted here for their service.

    Dean ford really puts alot of emotions into this song. I guess it's a war song but it reminds me of alot of people that have had a hard life and things just never seem to get better. At first I decided it would be my new pity me song but I know alot of other people, especially or including the people that fought in the wars that have had a much worse life than I've have.
