Kanye West – Runaway lyrics
And I always find, yeah, I always find somethin' wrong
You been puttin' up wit' my shit just way too long
I'm so gifted at findin' what I don't like the most
So I think it's time for us to have a toast

Let's have a toast for the douchebags,
Let's have a toast for the assholes,
Let's have a toast for the scumbags,
Every one of them that I know
Let's have a toast for the jerkoffs
That'll never take work off

Baby, I got a plan
Run away fast as you can

She find pictures in my email
I sent this bitch a picture of my, dick
I don't know what it is with females
But I'm not too good with that, shit
See, I could have me a good girl
And still be addicted to them hoodrats
And I just blame everything on you
At least you know that's what I'm good at

And I always find
Yeah, I always find
Yeah, I always find somethin' wrong
You been puttin' up with my shit just way too long
I'm so gifted at findin' what I don't like the most
So I think it's time for us to have a toast

Let's have a toast for the douchebags,
Let's have a toast for the assholes,
Let's have a toast for the scumbags,
Every one of them that I know
Let's have a toast for the jerkoffs
That'll never take work off
Baby, I got a plan
Run away fast as you can

Run away from me, baby
Run away
Run away from me, baby
Run away
Doesn't have to get crazy,
Why can't she just run away?
Babe I've got a plan,
Run away as fast as you can
Run away from me, baby
Run away
Run away from me, baby
Run away
Doesn't have to get crazy,
Why can't she just, run away?
Baby I got a plan,
Run away as fast as you can

(Pusha T)

24/7, 365, pussy stays on my mind
I-I-I-I did it, all right, all right, I admit it
Now pick your next move, you could leave or live wit' it
Ichabod Crane with that motherfuckin' top off
Split and go where? Back to wearin' knockoffs, ha ha
Knock it off, Neiman's, shop it off
Let's talk over mai tais, waitress, top it off
Hoes like poachers wanna fly in your Freddy loafers
You can't blame 'em, they ain't never seen Versace sofas
Every bag, every blouse, every bracelet
Comes with a price tag, baby, face it
You should leave if you can't accept the basics
Plenty hoes in the baller-nigga's matrix
Invisibly set, the Rolex is faceless
I'm just young, rich, and tasteless
P!

(Kanye)

Never was much of a romantic
I could never take the intimacy

And I know it did damage
Plus the look in your eyes, is killing me

I guess you knew an advantage
Cuz you can blame me for every thing

And I don't know how imma manage
If one day you just up and leave

And, I always find somethin' wrong
Yeah I always find somethin' wrong
You been puttin' up with my shit just way too long
I'm so gifted at findin' what I don't like the most
So I think it's time for us to have a toast

    DAEXPLAINURR
For anyone seriously interested in understanding this song and why it works allow me to offer insight.
This song is based around the story of a douchebag who suggests his girl run away because he will not change. Secondly, it is a concept, and it's not true to life as in the its not necessarily about his ex or about taylor swift. It's about an action, that's why people can relate to it universally. Whether having been on one side or the other in this story. A girl can cry at this sad song, grieving over her boyfriend who is a complete douchebag. A boy could relate in either that hes a douchebag and will never change, and that he fears his girl will leave him. The character is acknowledging he's a douchebag, but he's not going to change. That's how you can relate this to the Taylor Swift incident. A great point that was brought up was in the line "I'm so gifted at finding what I don't like the most, so lets have a toast.." There's a little charm to the fact that knowing something was bullshit (taylor swift winning best video) and being able to have the balls to say it, but its still a douchebag move. Finally the line "Let's have a toast for the douchebags" is shocking because of Irony. Who's ever heard of toasting to douchebags? Shock value.
The chorus is quite literal in meaning so I will be explaining the verses.
    Kanye's first verse:
She find pictures in my email.
I sent this girl a picture of my, d*k
^-(a douchebag move his girl found out about, sets up the story).
I don't know what it is with females
But I'm not too good with that, s*t
^-(such an "unromantic" line, something a douchbag would say, also it "what it is with females" is sort of acting like it's there fault).
See, I could have me a good girl
And still be addicted to them hoodrats.
^-(This douchebag isn't evil, he's human, he can have a good girl, but he's not perfect and still likes to mess around with those hoodrat girls, Showing a persons complexity is more true to life, than saying we are good or bad).
And I just blame everything on you
At least you know that's what I'm good at
^-(She can always count on him being a douchebag).
Than we have the first chorus, now Pusha T comes in and raises the Doucebag level even more. Because he's rapping, he can get away with showing one side of the story and not being apologetic because his raps are hard and not soft, conceptually speaking. So Pusha's verse is meant to amplify the douchebag character.
24/7, 365, pussey stays on my mind
I-I-I-I did it, all right, all right, I admit it.
^-(p***y is always on his mind, typical to a douchebag, also he admits he did 'it' which is probably cheated on his girl).
Now pick your next move, you could leave or live wit' it
^-(It's her decision, she can leave him or just live with it).
Ichabod Crane with that motherfuckin' top off
^-(The convertibles top is off, much like ichabod crane who didn't have a head, Clever metaphor, the materialism plays into his doucebagness).
Split and go where? Back to wearin' knockoffs, ha
^-(where is she going to if she leaves him? He doesn't reference a destination but rather says she would go back to a lifestyle. A less extravagant lifestyle where she's wearing knockoff meaning fake shoes. This means He is her source of income).
Knock it off, Neiman's, shop it off
Let's talk over mai tais, waitress, top it off
^-(with "Knock it off" hes using wordplay, as it sounds like knock off, but Knock it off means, just stop it. "Neimans, Shop it off" - Suggesting by going to neimans and shopping it will relieve the pain a little bit. "Let's talk over Mai Tais, waitress, top it off" - again look at the luxury hes providing for her, hes suggesting they resolve their dispute over an expensive drink and by topping it off, it means he can pay for the drinks to keep on coming.)
Hoes like Vultures wanna fly in your Freddy loafers
You can't blame 'em, they ain't never seen Versace sofas
^-(meaning a lot of hoes would love to be in this girls shoes, and you can't blame them because they've never even seen luxury like this).
Every bag, every blouse, every bracelet
Comes with a price tag, baby, face it
^-(he's saying face it girl, everything you buy with my money has a price tag which affords me the luxury of doing what I want, such as cheating, if I want to).
You should leave if you can't accept the basics
Plenty hoes in the baller-nigga's matrix
^-(If you can't deal with the lifestyle of a "Balla-nigga", meaning a dude with a lot of money, than just leave. A quite douchebag comment to make).
Invisibly set, the Rolex is faceless
I'm just young, rich, and tasteless
(The rolex is invisibly set with diamonds which signifies and certain type of luxury Hes young, rich, and tasteless = Huge Douchebag).
So, Pusha T amplified the douchebag character created in this song with his luxurious rhymes about the good life. Kanye's second verse comes in:.
Never was much of a romantic
I could never take the intimacy
^-(what a douchebag claim, intimacy is a soft tender emotion, and this douchebag's got none of that).
And I know it did damage
Plus the look in your eyes, is killing me
(The second real sign of regret, it pains him as much as he acts tough).
I guess you needed an advantage
Cuz you can blame me for every thing
And I don't know how imma manage
If one day you just up and leave.
^-(The advantage she has over him is she can blame him for all this stuff, and again he's opening up to his heart right now saying if she really did runaway, he doesn't know how he would manage).
In conclusion my point is this: Songs aren't as simple as, oh this one's about his ex or about Taylor. He started with a concept: The douchebag which is universally relateable and than painted a character that is A lot like himself to express this. The song is imitation, it's not real life. He's giving you something that can be true. Historians spit back the facts. Poets let you know how it may happen.
Aristotle said this "the imitation is one when the object
imitated is one, so the plot, being an imitation of an action, must
imitate one action and that a whole, the structural union of the parts
being such that, if any one of them is displaced or removed, the whole
will be disjointed and disturbed. For a thing whose presence or absence
makes no visible difference, is not an organic part of the whole. "
What that quote has to do with this song is that with a beautiful song like this, every line adds something to the song, removing even one line would alter the song a bit as not to make it whole.
Anyway I wrote this because somewhere out there I hope there is a younger version of myself hoping to really start grasping lyrics and song meanings. Hopefully this points you in the right direction. Apply this kind of analysis to some of your favorite songs and see if you can understand them better.

    @flicks127:.
To be honest, your little rant just looks like you're some kind of huge immature fan of Taylor. Look at the song. I really couldn't care less if apparently "Kanye and his people hyped up the song to be an apology to Taylor."
I'm not a hater towards Taylor or anything, I believe she's a decent singer, but she is overall completely overrated. People have the right to express their opinion and that's exactly what Kanye did at "that incident." Sure it might've been harsh but it's the truth, and people need to deal with that. People get all pissy and angry about it (or so they act to be) but really, who actually cares for Taylor? She's a celebrity. Unless you're actually a friend of hers don't even bother trying to be genuine. And really, if people could read minds, there would've been A lot of people agreeing with Kanye. Taylor isn't so amazing as the media (if I may brush your comments with irony) "hype" her up to be.
You need to ask yourself if truly Kanye West did a thirty-four minute song for Taylor Swift. The lyrics sound much too far intimate to be related to someone that's just a celebrity. I know that the lyrics may seem just blatant rapper bluntness, but you need to actually listen to the song first.
Nonetheless it really doesn't matter to be in the end what few of you critics and/or haters think about the song, because majority wins, and majority actually had the intelligence to see the true meaning beneath the rapper stereotype for once. For sure, Kanye's an a*****e, I'm not denying that - but everyone is once in a while.
Everyone puts themselves first truly when it comes down to it. Everyone's selfish. It's just about how honest they choose to be about it. So, yeah. : S

I believe this song can be taken in many ways but this is what I think. The begining key notes are just you know life going on possibly in a friends with benefit type relationsip, then when it changes a note something in the relationship changed. Something had happened and at this point kanye thnks this girl has fallen too hard for this guy. This guy likes her but because she has this one thing wrong with her (falling for him) he doesn't want that because he's still addicted to his "hoodrats" (all the other girls he hooks-up with). He at least has the balls to tell this girl to run away as fast as she can. He knows he's an a*e, scumbag, jerkoff, etc. Kanye comes in with the I always find something wrong, in this case her "good girlness. "
Pusha t comes in to explain how a girl can fall for what she likes in a guy but that's when she relaizes that what this guy has stuff she doesn't see or get with any other guy (could be money, s*, etc.) girl realizes guy has plenty of options ie.) "plenty hoes in the baller-nigga's matrix" so she think she has to do more to keep this guys attention. [*wrong*]
Once the girl starts trying to be his center of attention he says, "never was much of a romantic, i could never take the intimacy" this girl has obviously thought there hook-ups meant more. The look in her eyes from his lack of caring, did hurt him some but not enough for him to care. He just hopes she doesn't get up and leave because part of him actually does like the intimacy. But like he said, he always finds something wrong. Probably so he doesn't get to attached. Something about that scares him. But at the end when the chimes and violins come together but the disorteness is still there. There was something beautiful supposed to come out that relationship, but he always finds something wrong. Brittanyc.

Runaway is about a troubled guy who keeps finding himself in the wrong places in life. He's surrounded by douchebags, assholes, scrumbags, and jerkoffs who take all the great things in their life for granted. In his realization that he is a bad influence and person, he tells this great girl to run away as fast as she can so he does not keep hurting her. He wants what is the best for her and knows that he is going to suffer when she is gone, but he will not blame her if she leaves him since he does have a tendency to do bad things.

@ Musicalprincess: "I wish people wouldnt comment on something they dont know."
I only comment on what he's trying to say. I just wished that he used his own words instead of stealing from others. The song was intended to be an apology to tswift. If that is the case, then the lyrics don't make sense.
If indeed the song is about his ex (or another woman), then I can see your point. Then again, he shouldn't say that it's his apology either. In either case, he should be using his words.

Flicks127 - Dude, what are you going on about? This song has a perfectly simple meaning. Its about playing around to much and your gf eventually getting sick of it, but he's saying he isn't going to stop cause he is a douche! He is telling his lady to get away while she can cause really he is only going to hurt her in the long run.
Just cause you don't like it dude no need to say it doesn't make sense. Personally for all it worth bro, I think its actually quite a sad sentimental song about regret - at a guess would say it relates to him losing his fiance a year or two ago and he still feels pain and sorrow about how he was and that he lost what he did like the most.

I think that he is trying to say that he made mistakes in a relationship and that girl constantly forgave him. He is aware of his mistakes and he doesn't want that girl to get hurt, but he knows if they stay together, sooner or later his behavior will hurt her, so he trys to tell her to leave him and finds herself someone who will treat her as well as she treated him.

At kanye's concert last night in philly he performed this sound giving a shout out to who the song is about- a former lover from philly. You may all know he dated amber rose and she is from philly. Read the lyrics guys. Its about a relationship where like in all of his other relationships he picks on flaws and chats up other women, possibly cheating etc. Hes saying she doesn't deserve to put up with his s*t and she should runaway from him. He said at his concert he thought this past lover would always be his.

@flicks127 This isn't Kanye's first album, and it's nearly impossible to make a song these days that has an original story to them (besides the personalized story-telling) you seriously are a hater. He has won 3 Grammy's, and those people on the nomination committee have more credentials than you and I. He's definitely an original artist. He's one of the only few hip-hop artists that makes his music based on relatable story-telling techniques. Get off your high horse and show others some respect.

@Daexplainurr - Wonderfully written and well thought out passage you wrote. It's good to see other people take heed of written lyrics as a means of artistic expression and also nice to see that the English language is still being used properly.
Also, thank you for expressing your opinion of the lyrics, as I almost entirely agree with you in your interpretation. That's what art is, an interpretation of life.
My issues are with kw (or his management/publicity peeps) saying that this was his "apology" to tswift for his actions. It isn't an apology, it's more of a non-apology by him just saying that this is who he is, so live with it. It should have been trumpeted as his "response" and not an apology. . Either way, he is a huge douche for doing what he did to her. It was disrespectful, unprofessional and childish. If it had happened to him, he would've reacted much differently I'm sure. Kudos to tswift for reacting like a professional. Can you imagine if Shaquille O'Neil did that to Steve Nash?
The concept of the protagonist telling his woman to runaway if she doesn't like him and his lifestyle is not original (see artists such as: The Guess Who, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Pink Floyd - who wrote an entire album about that concept - , Lionel Richie, etc.). Even the imagery and alliteration used is stolen, he just switched out a few words. Plagiarism, period.
My summary: I believe he could truly be a great artist if he started using his own concepts, words and music and he or his people must stop garnering false publicity by stirring the pot unnecessarily.
Be yourself, don't just churn out 'dance pop'.

The music video runaway by kanye west is a visual representation of a song that focuses on a man's poor treatment of his girlfriend in a relationship. The image that is created for the audience is one of conformity through dance; while the images created through lyrics is one love, materialism and naivety. The song has a lot to the offer by the title runaway. This instantly tells the audience that this is a story of someone who treats their partner poorly. The message behind this song is that running away from him and the material world would be the best thing for her. Love is so precious that it doesn't want the recipient to get infected by the actions of the other through the mistakes, but love is so cruel that it can't help to infect the other. Runaway is him trying to get across the message that his girlfriend should leave him but at the same time she wants to stay because she has become infected with the fame and material life style
the use of the costumes through the clip shows black people all dressed in white formal cloths for a wedding. The bride is dressed in her native african gown that shows the passion, power and heritage that has been forgotten in her relationship. The white dances dress in black cloths show how elegant, raw and powerful they are the absence of make up on show the true beauty of the dancers. The sudden movements show a scene of violence which conflict with the song and the raw unadorned dance genre bring out the groom's feelings. Individualism is represented by the native dressed female, while the dance and music represent conformity. This clash makes the dancers appear very peaceful but at the same time make every movement look very deliberate. The white and black colors highlight the friction between the groups. The lyrics reinforce a story of trying to conform but finding it difficult and how at times the singer doesn't want to fit in at all.

I think it's about all those guys that continuosly s***w up and selfishly act like it doesn't bother them. The kind of guys that keep hurting their loyal girlfriends and show no compassion or consideration for their feelings. But deep down when their girl has had enough and leave they feel devastated. My ex is a perfect example of this, he literally though that going to a brothel was ok, now that I'm gone he is a complete wreck!

Man this song me feel good and depressed at the same time. I love it so much, I don't know much about music like this but I think it means something on how life goes. Running away from all our troubles because we don't want to face them anymore. And running from all the people that cause your troubles. Anyways, this song is the greatest ever. Thanks kanye west for your talent in singing.

Well here's the thing it's a music video not an a* shaking contest! I hate Taylor swift but out of the contestants she's the only one who truly qualified! The only one with a video the expressed her story! Yes everyone is entitled to their own opinion but that's why they have hater pages! Like e could have handled it differently and should have. But shot happens they made up. It's all good now. I love Kanyes music and won't stop the support over it and I don't exactly hate Taylor swift. But was it wrong the answer is: yes! Did she deserve the award: yes! Her fans went out and supported her in which beyoncès did not. So don't blame Taylor, blame beyoncès fans! :]

Petesmooth, I'm not saying that kw lyrics are original, I'm just saying that the meaning is deep, I love the way he expresses himself. Being a Latin women and feeling like people always underestimate me, makes me feel like he is hitting the nail on the head with the words and then the video just is bad *, he takes it home! I love the way he is intelligently pointing out that not only "natura American's" also make mistakes, but him being a African American has done a mistake [i. E. T. Swift] but those "American's that *over those in Detroit, are Douchbags, squmbags are those who deseve to be looked down on, are not. Not him who just intrupted T. Swift [who I enjoy her music] but those that f* over the American's, who think that material items are worthy of praise and the people are worthless [seriously] those American's need to get over the idea that kw is bad/cruel cause what they are doing is far worse them what he did. I don't know if the urated clipse ablum will suffice but I will be open minded and listen. Love ya, can't wait to hear from you!
Dezilve you are my besty, and it should be our national anthem! American is full of diverse people why shouldn't he be the beginning of the new America!

@ mfh - "So let's toast to em. Because they are a necessary evil. Without them who would we blame for our problems".
Really? You blame our problems on random douchebags and assholes? Like who in particular?
How about blaming some of the problems on over-hyped, conceited, so-called 'musicians' who can't stand it when other people have a share of the spotlight.
Kanye is a douchebag, an a*****e, etc. In this song he suggests that he is the subject of it, but that he doesn't care. Aren't those the types of personalities that create our problems?
@ Likeaboss - Kanye's music is unoriginal and he is a master rip-off artist. Most of his lyrics he has stolen from other real musicians and established literary giants. Time for him to have an original thought and create real music that involves more than one note and an auto-tuner (used by those who can't sing in key, btw).

What a simple song! It was interesting to watch Ye perform Runaway on snl tonight; he was striking single piano keys with one finger like he was creating magic! Hahaha! It was filmed in a white studio with cast-offs from Swan Lake in the background to lead our eyes away from his childish dancing and lack of vocal ability. Did you notice he lip-synched some and Auto-tuned the parts he sang live?
This song has a hook and that's about it. It has no real meaning and lacks musicality. It is a song for tweens who like a good beat.
    I expected better from him.

I think it means that sometimes in life we know some people are not good for us vice versa but deep inside they know we have accepted their faults. Sometimes it hurts them inside that they can't control their longing for other women. They wish the woman would just leave. Instead she sticks around and one day when she finally leaves he really wont know if he can bare it.

First of all, I respect everyones opinions and the direction that this mature, rational discussion is taking. It's nice to see and kw should be proud to have such faithful and emotional followers such as you.
Let me be clear: I don't hate kw. I wouldn't care enough to post here if I did. I commented on the meaning of the song; which he has publicly stated is his 'apology' to tswift for what happened. So, after watching his performance on snl, and listening to the lyrics, I realized that the lyrics weren't about that incident. In my opinion, he plagerised a bunch of lyrics from other artists, strung them together to create a "story", married them to a simple, four note tune and a simple beat that you can dance along to.
For the record, I don't like tswift or her music but that doesn't mean I don't respect her. I do however appreciate decent, original music that can convey a message or evokes emotion without having to rely upon a dance beat and stolen lyrics. Neither of them are capable of doing this in today's market.
A lot of you have excellent arguments and, if the song is indeed about him and his ex, then it does make sense and is quite touching. But, if it's an 'apology' to tswift as his marketing team have indicated, then he failed to hit the target.
The video was well done and worth watching but, again, is a marketing ploy used by many in the past to sell records (see: Michael Jackson, Pink Floyd, Guns N' Roses, etc.). I expect artistry and originality from someone who has been suggested should "lead the New America". By the way om0121, the "New America" was started about 50 years ago. Her name was Rosa Parks. She was the leader then and still is today posthumously.

Oh wow this song is so beautiful and has a deeper meaning than that of a man tell his girl to leave him because he is a bad person.
"I'm so gifted at findin' what I don't like the most
So I think it's time for us to have a toast"
He is saying that he is not going to comform to society and he is going to voice his opinion and because of this he is considered a squmbag, douchebag and really he isn't one. Think about the lyrics further in the song about the Ichabald Crane and his top off, if you know that story you know that Ichabald Crane was never accepted into the society he was in trying to educate the kids or ever welcomed because his views were not like those of everyone in that community. West talks about Versace sofa (really Versace sofa! I would love one) but since we aren't like everyone else (wealthy elite) anything that the different mind might point out will be looked down on and have their nose raised away from him (run away). So instead lets go shop at Neiman's and not take the time to understand where he is coming from or why he is thinking this way. The video is also very beautiful, Kanye is undoubtably a man worth listening to.

@ mrsfrank. I'm not a hater or "MADD" (check your spelling of a simple three letter word) at Kanye, I'm stating obvious facts. The song is pretentious, unoriginal and the lyrics make no sense at all. He's strung together a bunch of borrowed phrases and called them his own. Btw, this thread is about the meaning of the song and it has no meaning other than, what I perceive as his failure to write good lyrics, he is blaming others for his own problems. I have no time for people who give themselves unnecessary praise for doing a wrong.
I looked up his lyrics because, after watching the crap show that was his performance on snl, I tried to give him a break and understand what he was saying. After viewing the lyrics, I realized that I was right. It has no meaning. (I'm also not giving him any attention, as I'm sure he is not reading this - sorry to disappoint you).
Perhaps I should write a book. Better yet, I'll write an ultra-simple, four note song like his, with lyrics that make no sense, then people like you will buy it and revere me, too. Thanks for the suggestion, mrs!
Again, I'm not hating on him, just stating the facts. I have no hate to 'fuel' his fire. What fuels his fire are unintelligent, loyal, obedient followers who spend money on his so-called music and worship him. His ego is out of control and now you have become his fuel by defending his mindless music.
