Johnny Cash – Ghost Riders In The Sky lyrics
An old cowboy went riding out one dark and windy day
Upon a ridge he rested as he went along his way
When all at once a mighty herd of red eyed cows he saw
A-plowing through the ragged sky and up the cloudy draw

Their brands were still on fire and their hooves were made of steel
Their horns were black and shiny and their hot breath he could feel
A bolt of fear went through him as they thundered through the sky
For he saw the Riders coming hard and he heard their mournful cry

Yippie yi yaaaay
Yippie yi ohhhhh

Ghost Riders in the sky

Their faces gaunt, their eyes were blurred, their shirts all soaked with sweat
He's riding hard to catch that herd, but he ain't caught 'em yet
'Cause they've got to ride forever on that range up in the sky
On horses snorting fire
As they ride on hear their cry

As the riders loped on by him he heard one call his name
If you want to save your soul from Hell a-riding on our range
Then cowboy change your ways today or with us you will ride
Trying to catch the Devil's herd, across these endless skies

Yippie yi yaaaay
Yippie yi ohhhhh

There is a hell that we need to consider when life is over. So cowboy change your ways repent or you will go to a place where the devil is your boss and you will spend eternity being worn out by him, but its worse than that and it says to me. Cowboy you need to make a choice, heaven with a god who created you and loves you or hell with a devil who will make your life miserable as you burn in a lake of fire and brimstone where the worm dieth not and you are in torment in these flames!

A powerful message, with meaning and relevance to listeners of all ages and genre. Added to the message are a driving rhythym, mimicing the pounding of hooves of a ghostly herd and minor harmonies lending to an overall sense of beyond reality experience. I've been in thunderstorms in the mountains, and they truly do have this kind of power and effect. This has always been one of my favorite songs to listen to and to sing.

I love this song and listen to the various versions on Youtube.. The best I think is Vaughn Monroe. It haas the meaing clear and the beat and background are compelling. I like the explanation that a 12 year old boy heard the legend from a Native American and t hat some Indians especialy Apache believe that the dead's spirits live in the sky. But--what on earth is a cloudy draw?
    draw?

The lyrics play off of Dante's Inferno, where hell is described, from the ancient Catholic perspective, as a place of never ending torment and eternal physical suffering:. The cowboys, like Dante's inhabitants in hell, have led reckless, valueless lives (though obedience to religious doctrine has been down-played in the song), and must suffer for their behavior. Their sweating, eternal effort for no results, is straight of the Inferno.

The meaning of this song is simple. The ghost riders are cowboys that have died and gone to hell. In this case their hell is to chance the devil's heard of cows for eternity. This is a hopeless task according to song. There is also a warning to the living cowboy, change your way and start living right or you will join our hell riding on our range. In more modern terms live right with The Lord or you're destined to hell a never ending torment.

It's a sad song to my thinking, perhaps of a haunted cowboy? I really would like to know. What the author had in mind. I am in my late 70's but remember the song from when I was young. It suddenly showed up in my memory, and I would like to be able to understand it.
    Thank you.

This song is obviously about an older cowboy minding his own business, doing what he always did when he was still in the "game"- riding alone on the range. Some very angry cow ghosts came by being chased by some very angry cowboy ghosts who were deceased, but still very much in the "game." The coyboy ghosts were warning the older cowboy to get out of the "game" while he still has the time or wind up chasing something that was unattainable.
