    I think he tried to kill himself because of a woman he lost. He failed his suicide attempt and when he fought to keep himself alive he realized he didn't actually want to die along with her (hopes of joining her) and he felt as though he missed her but he still wanted to live.

    Hey just gonna throw my 2 cents out there. This song to me is a metaphor for finding yourself addicted to drugs. He awoke and with the best of intentions ran into something he didn't see coming. The fox is the triggering event or pain that was the catalyst for the addiction and again with the best of intentions he was going to put the fox out of it's misery and then looking up realizes the gravity of what he has done in his attempt to end the pain. The creature is the addiction that will now haunt him for many years despite trying to turn and run from it.
