I believe there is a two-fold meaning to this song. I belive first that it is a song about a man, that a man only have 3 chances at three different stages in his life to become successful, that the first woman in his life his mother (the cloud that hangs above his head), let him down and that the second woman (his guiding light) is his wife or girlfriend of whom he expects to be there for him the second time around at the 2nd stage of his life is expected to fix what his mother broke in the first stage of his life which is his broken heart; at the 3rd stage where the song talks about seasons changing and not "being that strong" he's become an old man. If he didn't fulfill the first 2 stages he grows tired and disappointed because this means his life didn't turn out the way he intended it to be, he didn't become successful and he has no lagacy to leave to the next generation. Meaning number 2 depicts a male who is autistic, trapped inside himself, not being able to bond with his mother and the world around him; and growing old that way.

This song is deep and is so well written. Pure emotion. To me is similar to "Both sides now" in theme. A man cocky and confident and loses the girl of his dreams. Maybe she was not pretty enough or he let little things bother him because he thought there was someone else out there better. Once she is gone- he realizes she was the one. The issues were with him not her. 2nd part is middle age- and he feels lost- he has not found that girl of his dreams, she is long gone, and he is optimism is fading- his mistakes might be a lifelong one. Stage 3- He is older and wiser, and wise enough to know- that mistake in youth can't be un-done. Now he realizes his future is short and will be lonely- the hell he never thought would happen. He realizes all he has are dreams not memories. It is raw and real.
