fun. – Some Nights lyrics
Some nights, I stay up cashing in my bad luck,
Some nights, I call it a draw.
Some nights, I wish that my lips could build a castle,
Some nights, I wish they'd just fall off
.

[Chorus:]
But I still wake up, I still see your ghost,
Oh Lord, I'm still not sure what I stand for, oh
What do I stand for? What do I stand for?
Most nights, I don't know anymore...
Oh woah, oh woah, oh woah oh oh.
Oh woah, oh woah, oh woah oh oh

This is it, boys, this is war, what are we waiting for?
Why don't we break the rules already?
I was never one to believe the hype - save that for the black and white,
I try twice as hard and I'm half as liked, but here they come again to jack my style
.

And that's alright; I found a martyr in my bed tonight,
She stops my bones from wondering just who I am, who I am, who I am
Oh, who am I? Oh, who am I? mmm... mmm
...

Well, Some nights, I wish that this all would end,
Cause I could use some friends for a change.
And some nights, I'm scared you'll forget me again,
Some nights, I always win, I always win...

[Chorus:]
But I still wake up, I still see your ghost
Oh Lord, I still not sure what I stand for
What do I stand for? What do I stand for?
Most nights, I don't know... (come on)

So this is it? I sold my soul for this?
Washed my hands of that for this?
I miss my mom and dad for this
?

No. When I see stars, when I see, when I see stars that's all they are.
When I hear songs, they sound like this one, so come on,
Oh, come on. Oh, come on, oh come on!

Well, This is it, guys, that is all - five minutes in and I'm bored again,
Ten years of this, I'm not sure if anybody understands.
This one is not for the folks back home;
Sorry to leave, mom, I had to go.
Who the fuck wants to die alone all dried up in the desert sun
?

My heart is breaking for my sister and the con that she called "love".
Man when I look into my nephew's eyes...
Man, you wouldn't believe
The most amazing things that can come from...
Some terrible nights... ahhh... oh woah, oh woah, oh woah oh oh
Oh woah, oh woah, oh woah oh oh

The other night, you wouldn't believe the dream I just had about you and me.
I called you up, but we'd both agree:
It's for the best you didn't listen,
It's for the best we get our distance... oh...
It's for the best you didn't listen,
It's for the best we get our distance... oh...

A lot of people are really over thinking this song and the video is a bit of a red herring. This song has nothing to do with soldiers or war. This is the inside thoughts of nate ruess and his path to success - it actually is pretty simple and the metaphors are thin and easy to identify.
The four opening lines is about his view on success, and his success he perceives as "bad luck," because of the stress that comes with it, hence its a draw. His lips are where his words come from, he wishes sometimes he had the power to do great things, and other times he wishes it was just done.
Waking up and seeing a ghost is about a love that left him (we can figure out that they left him not the other way around at the end of the song, keep reading). Was walking away from love - and what he seems to feel in his heart true love - something a person should/would do. If you walk away from love, if you can do it, then what do you stand for?
War is such an over used metaphor. He's been in music professionally for, 11 years now. This is "war" is now its serious - he's famous now - music is being used in tv ads, heavy radio air play. Breaking the rules is telling the producers, agents, and execs telling them what to do to go stuff it.
Not believing the hype is just that - oh nate you're so awesome! Oh nate everyone loves you - the hype of fame. He believes in black and white things - tangible things. And yet despite trying twice as hard to get where he is at, he is half as liked (oh he's arrogant, oh he stepped on people on the way up) and yet others are starting to copy his style and call it their own. Hey man, I was in the format for eight years!
A martyr in his bed. He's sleeping with a woman tonight that he has no interest in having a relationship with, that likes him more than he likes her, but for that moment swapping bodily fluids his life has meaning. She wants more, and will sleep with him in attempt to get it - a martyr.
Most famous people talk about the sense of being alone. For example when you fly commercially you get special treatment, get to sit in special rooms - mostly - alone - because we don't want anyone to bother you nate ruess. But then you feel isolated and your social circle is largely a group of sycophants with their hands out.
So this is it? I went to school, sold out to corporate labels, I signed up for this? I left someone I loved behind along the way instead of fighting for our relationship for this? I left my parents in glendale, arizona for this?
When I look at the sky its no longer with wonder, stars are just stars. When I hear songs they all sound the same, just like this one. Come on! There has to be something better.
Here I am, playing this five minute song (it is almost five minutes) and I'm already bored with music and it. I've been in the industry ten years and I don't think anyone understands how hard this has been for me.
This isn't for the folks back home - you're not going to like this heap of reality that's coming.
Sorry mom I left, but I do not want to spend my adult years in glendale, arizona (that is where he grew up and went to school). I had to leave because I felt I was going to die if I stayed.
My sister is in a crappy marriage, but they call it "love. " I think its terrible but they have a son, my nephew, and he is amazing and I marvel that out of their fake love, their crappy marriage, something this beautiful could come from it.
I dreamed about you (the lost love) and it was amazing. I called you up and we both agreed. You didn't listen to my pleas to not leave. It made sense we are now far apart. I have found peace and meaning in my life.
But alas, its only a dream.
Nate ruess is telling you his story.

This song has nothing to do with soldiers or the war in the mid-east. It's an internal struggles he's had for 10 yrs. With the music industry and continues to have now that he's famous (the people he left behind). The martyr in his bed is a woman who slept with him only because he's famous, not because she likes him or even knows him, just so she can tell her friends she did it - but there is one woman he really loved and she left him, probably because he was so focused on his music and making it big. Now he's looking back on the sacrifices he made to get where he is know and wondering if it was worth it.

The first time I heard this song I thought it was the most fun sounding song in the world, then I listened to the words and now it pretty much makes me cry every time I hear it. It resonates with me because my dad is also a con and I guess I'm hoping I may be one of those amazing things that came from a lie. And if I'm not I'm sure my children are inadvertently.

A brave young man, carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, answering the call and making the ultimate sacrifice, he desperately wants and craves the simple things that most people take for granted? Forgetting that their freedom isn't free. The song sounds like a cry out to the lord for more guidance, strength, and perseverance. He knows what he has to do and he also knows all the things he has to put on hold. Brilliant song? Powerful lyrics. This is just how I interpreted the song, only the person who wrote this truly knows.

First off I believe this song is about how some nights can bring good things and some are just bad. Trying to figure out who you are. Then it switches to mainly about nate reuss (lead singer) who used to be the lead singer of the format. He says ten years of this (trying to make it in the music industry) no one understands what he has been through. Not for the folks back home (arizona) I think refers to his fans of the format. He is sorry to leave az to carry on his music career, who wants to die in the desert sun I believe is referring to arizona's heat. Then to his sister who was in love with a bad person but he see's his nephew and realizes the good that did come out of the relationship.

This song is about the internal struggle that the main singer is facing. He spent his entire life thus far trying to get to where he is right now. But, now that he is his at his original "endgame", it isn't all that he hoped. It is a lot harder at his level of fame. Almost everyone is just a coworker or a fan to him and he misses his old friends who have probably moved on to other people. He probably misses his family too.
The mention of war is probably not war in the literal sense. It is war in that he is facing conflict in himself. Part of him knows that he is where he always wants to be. The other doesn't want to be there anymore. If you watch the trailer, it is footage of a re-enactment of the american civil war; the war where the you. S. Was having war with two halves of itself.
Such a great and honest song. This one is from the heart.

I am very impressed by all the interpretations I've read here. I think if you put them all together, you get the big picture. The song works on various levels and there's no reason that it can't have a real time level (Iraq war), a personal psychological level (the singer's self examination, values) and finally his relationship to family and friends. The level most tenuous to me seems to be the music industry angle. As a retired musician, I wouldn't trade the time I spent making music alone or with others for anything. Sure the business sucks, but looking for work sucks, and it fades away and becomes all about the music.

Being a christian whose frustrated with the lack of songs that speak to the lost vs the found, I was very excited with this song. It has that catchy secularized feel to it that seemed to have great lyrics to make a lost soul think. Then I heard "some terrible lies... " at the end. It sounds like he tried or wants to believe in the lord but doubts him. Fair enough, we all doubt him at times, but I hope this doesn't sway the hope that the lord is there. He is there, and he loves whoever is reading this! Wish I could figure out a way to prove it, but I haven't found it yet. Guess i'll just keep living the life.

It's about dealing with one's personal issues and crisis of identity and sense of self. A very common psychological dilemma with most late adolescence and young adults. It is asking the question that most who are in this situation are calling out: "what do i stand for? " it deals with the internal conflicts associated with this mental dilemma of the self and the constant struggles one experiences and is surrounded by in trying to understand who they are as an individual, a person, and as a member of society.

When I hear this song, I think of my son, who is a recovering herion addict. The 14+years battle to get here, recovering...what he really gave up. Just realized what was lost. His aunt would be the one looking into his mothers eyes. Doesn't want to die alone....Just beginning to understand the pain, hurt, impact on those who love him, all these years and those choices affected others, sometimes badly. The ghost doesn't answer, that's a good thing, keep the distance. (We all have our own interpretation anyway)

If you really listen to the song you can tell they are singing about the civil war and the music video shows the civil war in the video. It was a horrible war in US history that we lost alot of great people for a good cause but left slot of people wondering if it was worth it because families had to fight against their own and slot of lives were lost making them wonder who they were and what they should really stand for.

I think it a guy who is a soldier. I think he is away from his mom and dad and girlfriend. He questions what he is doing being a soldier. He wonders if what he is doing is right or not. He isn't sure. "five minutes in and i'm bored again," he is deployed again, and it's just getting old. Then it says he "ten years of this.. ". What else would you do for ten years? Serve in the military. He says "sorry mom i had to go. "

I think its about war, here's why- "some nights i stay up cashin in my bad luck, some nights i call it a draw" playing poker or gambling with his solider mates. "but i still wake up, i still see your ghost" his wife/girlfriends image. "oh lord, i still don't know what i stand for, what do i stand for... Most nights i don't know anymore" he doesn't know why he went to war and doesn't know if it's right etc. "this is it boys this is war what are we waiting for? " getting ready for it. " i was never one to believe the hype" didn't understand why people wanted to go to war. "i try twice as hard and i'm half as liked, but here they come again to jack my style" he fights good no one likes him tho and they make fun of him. "well some nights i wish this would all just end, coz i could use some friends for a change" he's lonely and wants to go back home. "some nights i'm scared you'll forget me again... Some nights i always win" he's sacred his partner will leave and next bit um. He wins poker? She sends him a letter? Not sure. " so this is it? Sold my soul for this? I wash my hands of that for this? Miss my mom and dad for this? " he's regretting war. " well this is it guys... Five minutes and i'm bored again" he wants to be home, he doesn't enjoy it. "ten years of this, i'm not sure anyone understands" ten years of war and people don't know how hard it is. " sorry to leave mom, had to go" he was forced into war. "who the f*** wants to die alone, all dried up in the desert sun" who would choose to go and die at war, or he's scared of dieing there? "my hearts breaking for my sister and the con that se call "love", but i look into my nephews eyes.. Man you won't believe the most amazing things that come from.. Some terrible lies" his sister thought a guy loved her but left, although not all bad comes out, her child was an amazing thing. "
The other night, you wouldn't believe the dream I just had about you and me, I called you up, but we'd both agree, it's for the best you didn't listen, it's for the best we get our distance. " they agreed that she should move on because he didn't know if he would be back home.
Thanks hope I helped abit, but hey we don't actually know they meaning until fun tell us. It's a beautiful song with great lyrics, I love it.

The references to 10 years in, dying in the desert sun, leaving family, have to be war. This sounds like a young veteran, now home, who lost his wife due to post traumatic stress disorder; who can no longer function because he can't even get through the night most nights. This is why so many vietnam veterans are homeless now - when they returned from fighting a war that they didn't understand or believe in, noone understood what they went through. They wake up in the middle of the night in terror, sometimes fighting the person closest to them, their wife, because they think they're about to be killed. Sometimes they can't deal with the horrors of what they've witnessed over there. Sometimes they can't get over the guilt of what they've done, sometimes killing children who would have killed them if they hadn't fired first. This song is about just getting through the night, any way possible.

My life and the people around it. You see they aren't really in it, if they knew me they wouldn't be fighting me, I am always seeking social justice, I am not losing but I am kind of on my own. I feel like I am at war with selfish people living in a selfish world. I don't care if people dislike me for it, I can live with myself when I close my eyes at night.

I kinda imagined iraq. I know, it's weird. But it was talking about missing your mum and dad and your sister. And seen ur nephew, leavn his love behind in america, and selling his soul to the government. That's what I got out of it. I don't get the ghost part but that could be metaphoric for his love. I'm not the patriotic type so don't think I'm obsessed with "protecting our freedom" but that's what my mind thought.

I remember hearing this song a lot as a kid so it's nostalgic. But now that I have been listening to it again I relate to it. Sometimes songs you grew up hearing end up speaking to you when you're older. It's pretty interesting. I do have to say that many of the explanations for this song were absolutely terrible.
