Eugene has a very disheartening view of his coming Maturity and the commercial needs of his profession. He sees the moment coming when it isn't fun anymore, isn't cathartic anymore, and his music withdraws into a parody of itself (the "rags of beige"). Note he wouldn't be the first person this would happen to, nor is the first to have written sadly about it. But it is him who faces this possibility at "the moment" of this song, and he seems to resign himself to the probability, as others do physical death.
