    It is about the battle/siege of alesia, a "major win" for the romans in during the gallic wars. The townspeople and soldiers inside alesia, under seige by the romans, were fighting for food. In a last bit attempt to keep the town, the leaders kicked out the women and children, to lessen the competition for food. The roman legions, without orders on what to do with civilians, would not let them through. The townspeople were literally left to starve in no-man's land between the roman legions and the gallic city.
