My interpretation is that he has a new girl in his life but that he can't let go of his relationship with his past love, "Alice". He tries to "see her differently" however certain features of this new significant other keep reminding him of her and bringing back mixed emotions. He also references separation and longing, leading me to believe that he and the girl are forced to spend time apart from one another, most likely due to his busy lifestyle or her choice of going to university leading them to separate, as referenced in "UNI".

I think it's clearly about ed and alice loving eachother, and when you listen to uni, sunburn suddenly becomes much more understandable. They let life come between them. She had to go to uni and he had his own life now down in london. Although I think it was much more easier for her to let go, and he's still hung up about her. The feeling and love will never go as it's his first love. Much like a sunburn scare. He did say in an interview he knows they'll marry one day. I just hope life doesn't get in the way.

I believe it is him falling for a girl, a close friend of some sort. But then she doesn't feel the same way or led him on in some way. She then moves on and it leaves him upset and feeling as though she never gave him a chance, maybe he feels like he is not worth it and will have to change, it was a milestone and will never go away, like the scar of a sunburn.

I think that he has fallen for someone that he didn't ever think he would because she is a close friend. But I think that they were bestfriends and they would tell each other everything, so when she got a boyfriend ed felt jealous and didn't want to share her as he soon got close and fell! It is basically not letting go and hurts and stings just like a sunburn if you spend to much time in it, in ed's case with her then they will soon leave you hurt and stinging as you didn't realise what was actually happening!
