Dr. Dog – Heart It Races lyrics
And we're slow to acknowledge the knots in our laces
Heart it races

And we go back to where we moved out to the places
Heart it races

I bought it in a can and stirred it with my fingers
Singin' boom da da da da da da boom dat dat dat da da
Threw it out the window

Lately you've been tan, suspicious for the winter
With your boom da da da da da da boom dat dat dat da da
Legs like little splinters

Legs like little splinters

And we're slow to acknowledge the knots in our laces
Heart it races

And we go back to where we moved out to the places
Heart it races

I sold it to a man and threw him out that window
He went boom da da da da da da boom dat dat dat da da
Made his wife a widow

Heart it races alone
Heart it races alone
Heart it races alone... [repeats]
Made his wife a widow
Heart it races alone
Heart it races alone
Heart it races aloooooone

Legs like little spiders
Legs like little spiders
Boom

Laces are in a sense their lives, (a guy and girl), but the knots in the laces represent disruption, termoil, a complication in it- perhaps, them breaking up? "and we go back to places where we moved out to the places" implies where they used to live together, followed by heart it races has the implication that they go there and are sort of hit by overwhelming memory of compassion/love. Their hearts literally race. As for the term "i bought it in a can," and "i sold it to a man," is some keen phrasing for his love for some girl. She leaves him and after awhile he gives up on it throws that love away. But then, he sells it to a man, who falls in love with this girl. They marry, and he becomes jealous and feel that love again- and throws the man out of the window (hypothetically). Making the girl he loves, a widow.

The first fun version's musical style did not match up to the lyrics. The Dr. Dog version forced me to listen to the lyrics, allowing me to see how they actually are enough to rip your heart out.

At first, I thought that it was just a mix of poignant moments in life that make's the heart race: s**, drinking to forget, murder, and going back to the town you moved out. Then I read, reread, and read the above. As it came into focus, I see, nooooo, there is only one correct interpretation: It is a song about the singer's ex wife! Also, the imagery doesn't need to be metaphorized. It is quite simple and litereral-for the most part.

Simple, literal, surprisingly the only interpretation that perfectly fits.

Sadly, I will no longer be able to apply these lines directly to my life by broad interpretation. But still, very powerful.

This song to me is about pagan ritual. The knots in the laces are the ligature.
Go back to where we moved out to the places is about sacred places where folk connect to the land and Great Mother.
The reference to buying in a can and sold it to a man are about spells and fetish.

The knots in our laces represent the past and previous mistakes holding us back (the karma): the fork stuck in the road that makes us fall during our journey.
We then end up going back to the persons we departed from just because going back is easier than going forward with life.
This leads to confusion and jealousy, giving your heart away and using other people that than you crush (throw out the window as if they are disposable).
To make your heart race, you need to find yourself first (heart it races alone).
I don't know I'm just guessing. But it does make sense.
