David Bowie – The Man Who Sold The World lyrics
We passed upon the stair, we spoke of was and when
Although I wasn't there, he said I was his friend
Which came as some surprise I spoke into his eyes
I thought you died alone, a long long time ago

Oh no, not me
I never lost control
You're face to face
With The Man Who Sold The World

I laughed and shook his hand, and made my way back home
I searched in foreign lands, for years and years I roamed

I gazed a gazely stare at all the millions here
We must have died alone, a long long time ago

Who knows? Not me
We never lost control
You're face to face
With the Man who Sold the World

The writer might be portraying a drug addict and thus while walking down the stairs he probably saw a mirror and looking at his own reflection he might have remembered his younger self, before being a drug addict, full of passion and confidence.
The writer also states that he didn't lost control of himself but instead the reflection did.
The writer says that he is looking at the man who sold his whole world in the chase for drugs. When he made his way back home he though hard about his life and at what stage he is today and then he thought that he was wrong instead they both died alone a long long time ago. Who knows says the author they both never lost control.

The second meaning for this might be a young boy searching for fame and stardust full of passion and confidence was lost a long time ago. When the author saw his reflection in the mirror while going down the stairs he might have seen a young person same as him when the writer was of his age. And thought Where is the Younger self of me, He tells him bye and thinks did the younger me died a long time ago, but I didn't lost my senses. When he went home back he thought hard and noticed he was wrong he had died a long time ago too but my greed didn't stop at all, and says to the younger self that we both died a long time ago and you are face to face with the Man who Sold The World.
