Crosby, Stills & Nash – Find The Cost Of Freedom lyrics
Daylight again, following me to bed
I think about a hundred years ago, how my fathers bled
I think I see a valley, covered with bones in blue
All the brave soldiers that cannot get older been askin' after
You
Hear the past a callin', from Ar- -megeddon's side
When everyone's talkin' and noone is listenin', how can we
Decide?

(Do we) find the cost of freedom, buried in the ground

Mother earth will swallow you, lay your body down
Find the cost of freedom, buried in the ground
Mother earth will swallow you, lay your body down

(Find the cost of freedom buried in the ground)

I am a US NAVY VIETNAM VETERAN and I heard this song about three years after I was discharged from active duty, and at time I thought it moving but made no since, now that I heard it again at the end of this week's SEAL TEAM, I understand it was meant to convey what it means to be of service to our country and making the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.

The singer is reflecting back "a hundred years ago" (Civil War) at how his "fathers bled." Imagining "a valley, covered with bones in blue" (dead Union soldiers who fought and died for the freedom of others). This song, which I believe was written in the early 1970s, comments on the controversy of war at that time and the quality of debate surrounding the War in Vietnam - "When everyone's talkin and no one is listenin', how can we decide?" It ends with the rhetorical question: Do we still find the cost of freedom buried in the ground?

I don't know exactly what Crosby, Stills and Nash were thinking when they wrote the lyrics to "Find The Cost Of Freedom," but today it was a large oil spill in Santa Barbara, CA that caused me to remember the refrain, "Mother earth will swallow you, lay your body down..."

How do you not know the true meaning of this song? The men and women who are willing to die for family and country, to sacrifice everything deserve all the respect we can give them. Do not diminish what they are willing to do to protect all of us. We must do more. I was so moved by this song. Family members are in the military and we pray every day that they are safe. God keep them safe and everyone who serves.
