Christmas Songs – Do You Hear What I Hear? lyrics
Said the night wind to the little lamb,
Do you see what I see
Way up in the sky, little lamb,
Do you see what I see
A star, a star, dancing in the night
With a tail as big as a kite
With a tail as big as a kite

Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy,
Do you hear what I hear
Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy,
Do you hear what I hear
A song, a song, high above the trees
With a voice as big as the sea
With a voice as big as the sea

Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king,
Do you know what I know
In your palace warm, mighty king,
Do you know what I know
A Child, a Child shivers in the cold
Let us bring Him silver and gold
Let us bring Him silver and gold

Said the king to the people everywhere,
Listen to what I say
Pray for peace, people everywhere!
Listen to what I say
The Child, the Child, sleeping in the night
He will bring us goodness and light
He will bring us goodness and light

This song was originally composed by Gloria Shayne Baker and the lyrics were written by Noel Regney in October of 1962 during the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis. A producer (do not know his name) had made a request to Regney to write a Christmas song, but events as they unfolded during the Cuban Missile Crisis likely provided the inspiration for Regney to write lyrics pleading for peace as the confrontation between the Soviet Union and the United States escalated towards nuclear warfare. The lyrics themselves were written down hastily after Regney noticed two babies in a stroller looking at each other and smiling. He brought home the lyrics to his then wife Baker, and he asked that she write the music for the lyrics. The finished version of the song was released shortly after Thanksgiving in 1962. The very first recording of this song was from the Harry Simeone Chorale but it did not go noticed by a wider audience. It wasn't until October of 1963 that the song caught became a hit after Bing Crosby released his version in October of 1963. Since then, there have been numerous artists who have either performed or recorded their own version although arguably it is Crosby's version that is most widely recognized.

This is my favorite Christmas song - so much so that I'm doing a Christmas program this year for the community with it as the central song that highlights our theme which is "The Greatest Night In History". We ask those present to imagine being there that night of Jesus birth, with the wind whispering to the lamb, the lamb to the shepherd, and the shepherd to the 3 kings, and resultingly the Kings telling everyone (and the shepherds) that Jesus has come to bring peace to the world. What an event!
