Carly Simon – Share The End lyrics
(Carly Simon/Jacob Brackman)

Here come the priests, each one wailing and bemoaning
Lordy, they got their heads bowed down
Here come the madmen, they're too excited for atoning:
"Burn the mosque," they're shouting, "Burn it down!"

Save me a place, surround me with friendly faces
All of us have gathered here to share the end -
To watch the world go up in flames

Please, Lord we're not ready
Give us a day
Give us an hour...

Here come the kings, Let's dispense with their apologizing
Just bring on the acrobats and clowns
Here comes the rumble, Hang on for universal dying
Please ignore the baying of the hounds

Save me a place, surround me with deadly faces
All of us have gathered here to share the end -
To watch the world go up in flames

Please, Lord we're not ready
Give us some time to work things out...
Please, Lord we're not ready
Give us a day
Give us an hour...
Please, Lord we're not ready
Give us some time to work things out...
Please, Lord we're not ready
Give us a day
Give us an hour...

Not that this INGENIOUS piece would be the first to address a chaotic, violent, bone-picking universal destruction--
but still, it's astounding in its relevance to the present. This song was recorded on an early Simon album ("Anticipa-tion"), way back in 1971. Whether the issue today is climate change or COVID -- or both (and why would we not believe the latter is a product of the former???) -- Simon and Brackman NAILED IT, SPOT ON.
Yesterday's "Mosque" is today's "Capitol." As for those "Kings," only one 'King' comes to mind-- and his name must not be mentioned. Simon was about so much more than a great hook and a "You're So Vain." So much integrity, intellect, poetry in the music, back then-- From Laura Nyro - To The Roches -- To Rickie Lee Jones, James Taylor, Paul Simon, etc., etc. While I like Big Butt, and I cannot lie... Okay, so maybe that IS a lie. .. . .
