The Byrds – Turn! Turn! Turn! lyrics
Words-adapted from The Bible, book of Ecclesiastes
Music-Pete Seeger

To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)
There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)
And a time to every purpose, under Heaven

A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep

To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)
There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)
And a time to every purpose, under Heaven

A time to build up, a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones, a time to gather stones together

To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)
There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)
And a time to every purpose, under Heaven

A time of love, a time of hate
A time of war, a time of peace
A time you may embrace, a time to refrain from embracing

To Everything (Turn, Turn, Turn)
There is a season (Turn, Turn, Turn)
And a time to every purpose, under Heaven

A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time for love, a time for hate
A time for peace, I swear it's not too late

Being a Christian with Bible beliefs, this song to me is as it says it is for the now. As it has always been, think about it, "a time to plant, a time to reap; a time to laugh, a time to reap (as it has been since the beginning of time.) I could comment more about it but will keep this short and allow the reader to think of all that is included within the confines of these Biblical verses of truth.

The words are from Eccleiastes 3:1-9. In Hebrew the name of the book is Qoheleth and means assembly. In this context, Qoheleth is used as proper name of the holder of a specific of that specific office in the assembly. I suspect the writer is a lecturer. The overarching theme is the unchanging order of events contrasted with the uncertainty of the future. The "right" time of an event is the time in God's timelessness and unknown by man. Man is to resign himself to enjoy both the gifts and sorrows as they come from God. The lyrics lists and contrasts some of those gifts and sorrows. The timelessness of God and the "time" that embraces us is found throughout the Old Testament and carries on into the New Testament. When asked about when He will return, Jesus said man doesn't know the day or the hour. Practically since Pentecost, Christians have tried to predict when He will return and seem to use the Book of Revelation as if it is a magic key to the future. It isn't. It is simply a code book John's community wrote to encourage Christians undergoing persecution under Nero and Diocletian. It says nothing about specific future events in our age. On his deathbed, Bob Hope's wife Delores asked him where he wanted to be buried. He said, "Surprise me." That's what we should believe about Our Lord's return.

We are being told that we are out of sync. Much as we were during the sixties. The song is very apropos now too, because we are damn sure out of sync. Again. The song seems prophetic as it reminds us that we are doing things at the wrong time, Our values are twisted and selfish, controlled by the powers that be with no purpose, out of time (season) and far removed form heaven. Beautiful haunting lyrics.
