Boz Scaggs – We're All Alone lyrics
Outside the rain begins
And it may never end
So cry no more, on the shore a dream
Will take us out to sea
Forevermore, forevermore

Close your eyes and dream[?]
And you can be with me
'Neath the waves, through the cave of hours
Long forgotten now
We're all alone, we're all alone

Close the window, come alight
And it will be all right
No need to bother now
Let it out, let it all begin
Learn how to pretend

(repeat intro)

Once a story's told
It can't help but grow old
Roses do, lovers too, so cast
Your seasons to the wind
And hold me dear, oh, hold me dear

Close the window, come alight
And it will be all right
No need to bother now,
Let it out, let it all begin
All's forgotten now
We're all alone, all alone

Close the window, come alight
And it will be all right
No need to bother now,
Let it out, let it all begin
Owe it to the wind, my love
Oh, hold me dear

(first four lines instrumental)
All's forgotten now, my love,
We're all alone, we're all alone

It's about the disapproval two people face around themselves simply for wanting to be together. Outside the rain begins and it may never end. So they have to close their eyes and dream themselves in a better place where they are all alone. Away from this unwanted disapproval.
The have to conceal their love for each other so they have to learn how to pretend. I think they are older but don't want to let that stop them from being in love so they cast their seasons (the age) to the wind.

As a senior citizen who has been madly in love with only one person in my life, I believe that these are two elderly people in love who are committing suicide together. One of them is terminally ill, and the other one can't live without the only person who makes them complete. They choose to die together rather than to live without love.

My interpretation is completely different and simple. Haven't you ever snuck into a lovers bedroom? This time she comes to him. Maybe even through a window on a stormy night. He's older and tasting forbidding fruit, but he truly loves her and she him. His poety to her, helps relax her. He ask her to close the window and we can only guess how tenderly he is to her. They are in love, s** is not the layer of depth this songs sings to, its the love and passion they have for each other. It's him getting her to relax enough that she can work through her young insecurities and be the equal passionate lover she wants to be. That's what I hear because I been there. Sorry, but sometimes simple is true. Not a sad song. A beautiful love song.

These lyrics are different from the original Boz Scaggs lyrics and closer to the Rita Coolridge cover. I like the original lyrics better.
This song is about someone who is comforting a loved one through a tough period. He can't make the bad situation go away, but soon it will be past and his ami can get lost in his arms and just let go of the sorrow. "Throw it to the wind". They are all alone where it is safe. This song helped me understand a loved one's suicide, but it has also helped me through a stressful change in a romantic relationship when I realized that I had to be the comforter rather than the comforted. It can also be a song about forgiveness and moving past the harsh words and difficult times.

I listened to the Silk Degrees album of Boz Scaggs when I was in college back in 1977. I hadn’t dated much prior to this; there was a guy that lived in the dorms that paid a lot of attention to me. We had great conversations. But it never went to a boyfriend/girlfriend situation. The next year when each of us lived in separate apartments, we didn’t become boyfriend/girlfriend but we became lovers.

So for me, this song was always meaningful- closing the window and it will be alright. We were all alone and no one else knew what was happening. We always were at his apartment and his roommates were gone often. I wanted him to hold me tight!! I know he felt something for me but he never wanted to be my boyfriend. I loved him.
I graduated before him. We went out separate ways. A couple of years later, he came to my apartment and shared with me that he was gay. That totally made sense. He was a Very sensitive man and well dressed. We kept in touch for awhile-but I haven’t talked to him in 25+ years. I’m now married with 2 children.

I have always heard this as a story of two long time lovers separating. I think one is dying and says outside the rain begins and it will never end. He tells his lover that you can always be with me in your dreams and memories. Just calm yourself and think of me. We will be alone together again in your mind. Hold me now and remember you can keep loving me as I will love you.

I don't know what it means but it means a lot to me.

I first heard this when I took my wife's ashes to sea.

    She had passed from cancer.

I released her into and beneath the clear blue waves.

There were people with me but I never felt so alone.

I could only think of being with her. It was as if our time together was but a dream, over so quickly.

    Time had passed so quick.

    ...everything fades maybe memories too

I yearn to be held by her.

It was near Christmas and so cold.

But maybe she was telling me it would be alright and I needed to move on.

    Start again.

Only the person who wrote the words knows the true meaning, but the respondents have very interesting connotations. My take on it is a young couple deeply in love, for whatever reason have a painful ending to their relationship and go their separate ways. This is something they come to regret as years go by. They end up meeting again and see themselves in a different light, aged. The man wants to rekindle the relationship including a sex life and carry on as they did when they were young. She is self conscious and how friends and family (outsiders) will possibly never accept the reunion at their age. The rain (darkness) begins in the outside world. No need to bother worrying what people will say. There is innuendo with crashing waves and dreams he can convince her its okay, and the joy of their love life can be forevermore. Turn down the light and pretend they are young again. Let go of inhibitions and forget about what drove them apart years ago. Don’t think that they have wasted time, rather to begin again.

It's all about a comforting kind of love. Saying this time I assure you, I will be here with you. Forget all the troubles of the past, struggles will always be there, but I am here to cast them all away. With the two of us everything will be fine. Let's focus on what's ahead. So we can take out the fears.
