The two meanings above forget to include the importance of the second part of the song, which is called the straightener; when a person loses their innocence and faces their impending mortality, you are left with a choice between deciding that your life is meaningless because it must end, or you can try to live every moment to its utmost potential, even it is with the bittersweet knowledge that the end is coming.

The first and second verses are both deemed illusion by the author, Terry Butler. That is, verse 1 recounts a time of feeling overly optimistic. The second verse recounts a time of feeling overly pessimistic due to a tendency to compare current feelings with those of his illusory childhood. Seeing it as a game now, a silly game that cannot be won, he no longer takes life seriously and is neither positive nor negative about.
