In the first few stanzas she's talking about sleep (what we do when the moon is out) and how our body's letting go of adrenaline is what allows us to fall asleep. As biological creatures we're actually in grave danger when we're asleep because we're defenseless. Many animals sleep in packs with designated "watchmen" to avoid this dangerous state. Others only allow half of their body to sleep at a time so that the other half can remain alert (this is true). Ironically, putting ourselves in this life threatening state is what calms and rejuvenates us! In this same way, the way we are rejuvenated in relationships is when we hit rock bottom, let go and dare to try again. The moon is a good metaphor for these cycles as it makes it's course from full to invisible and back again.
