The beatles always denied that the song was about lsd.
What really happened was: John's son Julian brought home a picture of his friend/ crush and it was of her in the night sky and it inspired John.
That was how the song originally started. But I'm not gonna lie, it seems like more than just a coincidence with the whole lsd thing. So I kinda think it evolved into a song about drugs, but it started as a song based on that picture.

I can only guess. I think it's about using your imagination. I get the feeling its about a cartoon with different colours. I love the song because it's just really catchy. I try so hard to imagine the things in the song. I get the thought that this is about imagination cause they say picture yourself. It suggests try to imagine these things. I drew a picture once of this song. I love it.

You think The Beatles were on crack and LSD its a song about Julian Lennon drawing a picture and saying to his father it's Lucy in the sky with diamonds. So John was inspired by his son to write a song about imagination and your childhood wonders and imaginary friends and how much fun it is to be a kid. They are trying to convey the same message as Disney world look inside yourself to find your inner kid and just have as much fun and use as much of your imagination as you possibly can. While you 21st century digital jerks think it's about drugs or someone in a asylum but it is really about a kid.

The 2 suspect reasons, lsd taking song writers or sum picture that john lennons kid drew, I think that they are both right. John lennons kid was on lsd and drew sum messed up pix for his dad who wrote a song about it! Also, lucy in the sky with diamonds is like cockney ryming slang. Are you on lucy? Lucy sky diamonds, lsd, several liverpudlians have said are you on lucy to me as a joke when I said summit, its slang for are you on lsd, like you might say to ur m8 are you on crack cos he said summit weird.
