Audioslave – I Am The Highway lyrics
Pearls and swine bereft of me
Long and weary my road has been
I was lost in the cities
Alone in the hills
No sorrow or pitty
For leaving I feel

I am not your rolling wheels
I am a highway
I am not your carpet ride
I am the sky

Friends and liars
Don't wait for me
Cause I'll get on
All by myself
I put millions of miles
Under my heels
And still too close to you
I feel

I am not your rolling wheels
I am the highway
I am not your carpet ride
I am the sky
I am not your blowing wind
I am the lightning
I am not your autumn moon
I am the night
The night

I am not your rolling wheels
I am the highway
I am not your carpet ride
I am the sky
I am not your blowing wind
I am the lightining
I am not your autumn moon
I am the night

I agree a lot with both of you. Maybe in my case a little more dogmatic due to the actual relocation for him and after him, both being the same as in the song, city and hills. And yes, I see that the way he treated me, had such an impact negatively to this very day, that I still cannot get those words out of my head, and now, I wonder no more why words hurt so much more than bruises. I cannot get those words out of my head. Almost 30 years later. I think both of you are perhaps correct. Idk. But that's what it means to me, every time I hear it. I had only hoped he had treated the next woman with so much more love, and compassion. As, he is FULLY capable of doing so. But he chose not to I fear.

    It means loving someone entirely.
The love of God that is joined, separate, paradoxically woven, embedded and broken. Engulfed, and unconditional, painful and a sense of momentum. Lifelong treasure of destiny that is not within your reach. A curse. A song. What breaks and sustains you. All at once.
Unobtainable. Yet, still. Surrounds you and carries you.

I think the message that Cornell is delivering here,
is that of one who was being taken for granted not seen fully for who he is, but seen as something less. When in truth he knew he was much more then what he was seen as. But I think in order for him to show that person[s] that he was much more he put millions of miles under his heels and even though he knew he would be okay without that person[s] making him feel less of himself he still felt close to them because they are what got him there to state that he was something much more then what they knew.

To me, like many others here, it's about the hurt of being used mentally, financially by those he thought were family/loved ones. They thought he was too weak to leave or realise he was actually a badass, when he finally left them behind he was more powerful than he ever let himself believe - I'm not your carpet ride(Aladdin - I can show you the world), I'm the entire sky - I am free of the confinement of being walked all over and I never wanted the things they wanted to see or do or be anyway, I was just going along with it, afraid to be alone but it was the lonliest being around them - so basically full on Depression. You can't undo history so all you can do is try move forward, put distance between those users and narcissists, even the furthest point on the map isn't far away enough. This shows a sense of anger at how awful the memory of these people and how they made him feel.
He repeats how he is so much more than a vehicle for people to get what they want, he answers to none of them anymore. He is finally living and it's because he is rid of them.
I like to lovingly think of my father when I listen to this.
    RIP Chris Cornell

Pearls & swine reference found in Matthew 7:6. Valuable knowledge of the kingdom of God shouldnt be taken lightly . Foolish.,Selfish, self centered people will take your kindness for weakness and end up hating you, or simply won't appreciate what you give of yourself or relate to the pain their actions cause you. I relate to this song in that he gave his whole self to this person and she only used him. He knows he's not wrong for leaving , but can't get the memory out of his mind because he loved whole hearted and hoped for a life with her. " Do not give what is holy to dogs , or cast your pearls before swine lest they turn on you and attack you or trample them under foot."

I think the "pearls and swine" is a bible reference meaning that at times valuable things can not be appreciated by some. The person is clearly feeling underrated by those around him (friends and liars the same), like no one supports him, he feels alone in his venture, so he is better off going away from them. But I don't think he is trying to prove them wrong, he just gives them the reason why he feels that leaving is the best for him. They are focusing in the small things while not paying attention to the whole picture, the true potential in him.

This is very clear to me. The pearls in swine is a biblical reference, the meaning is don’t give yourself to bad character people, they will turn on you and tear you to pieces. The I am not your rolling wheels I am the highway. I am much more than you see me. The I put a million miles under my heels but I am still to close to you. This is only something that a person who has been through an abusive relationship understands. You never really get away from the abuse it’s always there with you. I believe that Chris was describing an abusive relationship and never being appreciated always undermined even hated.

I think the message is that he is the destination, not the journey. The song, most likely a story about 2 lovers, starts off by saying that pearls and swine have bereaved him. Another way of saying jewelry and dates weren't enough? Now, he has to escape her. The reason being is she treated him like a road. A means to an end. He doesn't feel bad about leaving, but after he has he realizes he can't escape that memory of their love. This is all just my opinion. I'm not a professional or anything. Just a guy at work. Bored.
