Alison Krauss – Didn't Leave Nobody But The Baby lyrics
Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris

Go to sleep you little baby (Go to sleep you little baby)
Go to sleep you little baby (Go to sleep you little baby)
You'are mama's gone away and you'are daddy's gonna stay
Didn't leave nobody but the baby.

Go to sleep you little baby (Go to sleep you little baby)
Go to sleep you little baby (Go to sleep you little baby)
Everybody's gone and the cotton and the corn
Didn't leave nobody but the baby
.

You're a sweet little baby (You're a sweet little baby)
You're a sweet little baby (You're a sweet little baby)
Honey and a rock and the sugar don't stock
Gonna bring a bottle to the baby
.

Don't you weep pretty baby (Don't you weep pretty baby)
Don't you weep pretty baby (Don't you weep pretty baby)
She's long gone with her red shoes on
Gonna need another lovin' baby.

Go to sleep you little baby (Go to sleep you little baby)
Go to sleep you little baby (Go to sleep you little baby)
You and me and the devil makes three
Don't need no other lovin' baby.

Go to sleep you little baby (Go to sleep you little baby)
Go to sleep you little baby (Go to sleep you little baby)
Come on lay your bones on the alabaster stones
And be my everlovin' baby...

So I've heard that this song is a song written by slaves and I've also found that the song is an old irish lullaby re-written for the movie. Either way it was re-written for the movie according to alison krauss. The original is shorter and while still dark not quite as dark. Like the devil thing in the original is you and me and the angel makes three.
I think that possibly whether its an old irish lullaby or a slavery lullaby that it probably has similar meanings. There's a baby who has been abandoned whether by accident (death of parents) neccesity (parents had to work to provide I mean think potato famine, ran away or sold off) and the person left to care for the baby can't provide. The person caring for the baby loves it but can do nothing to keep it alive and either the baby ends up starving to death or is murdered by the caregiver.

Okay I think it may be about the mother of the baby getting sold for slavery and the father being left behind (preobably disabled?) "everybody's gone to the cotton and the corn" corn and cotton are commonly in plantations in the south for slavery. She's long and gone with her red shoes on" is probably the shackles around her ankles thus refering to the red shoes and finally "come and lay your bones on the alabaster stones and be my everloving baby" is the baby dieing and the mother grieving and holding the baby in the last moments of life. Does the mother find the bebe? I dunno bt this is just my opinion! Xd.
