this song is full of images about the fragility of human existence, perhaps relationships more than existance itself- and portrays the searches people make fro certainty and security, whetehr financial or relationl. it weaves the polarities of security with tragedy- mentioning achievments and representations of these- 'certificate to credit years of servcies' and in the same verse, hints at how these can be suddenly lost; 'the social security a miracle is high tragedy'

The genius line in the song for me is 'a fractured family tie another christening', repeated over at the end, and the plaintive hollow melody in unison with this statement, seem to signify the contradictory unions and fractures which give a sense of meaningless futility to the observer ( in this case, the voice/narrator who is merchant)
